I Am Angry With You But Never Mind.

I sure do not want to make him any angrier with me so he will remain nameless. He had come up to the village and left his wallet at home. He wanted to write me an IOU for the price of a pint of milk and a dram and half pint of ale.

I refused point blank to accept his IOU, instead I offered to purchase the pint of milk and then go with him while he had his whisky and his half pint of ale. I would then drive him home. We had spent a good time at our vegetable plots and the time together relaxing would be worth every penny. He reluctantly agreed. It was while I was driving him home his pride got the better of him and he said, “I am angry you would not accept my IOU.”

I told to stop fassing ( a good Scottish word) because as sure as sure there would come a day very soon when I would do the same. Age is catching up with me I told him I forget things all the time.

Friendship is the most wonderful thing we have and it has to be cherished. I have decided I will probably forget my wallet next week some time.

I will do this because of some of the things life has taught me over the years. Let me share just one or two of them with you.

I've Learned.

I’ve learned-

that you cannot make someone love you. All you can do is be someone who can be loved. The rest is up to them.

I’ve learned-

that it takes years to build up trust, and only seconds to destroy it.

I’ve learned-

that no matter how good a friend is, they’re going to hurt you every once in a while and you must forgive them for that.

I’ve learned-

that it’s not what you have in your life but who you have in your life that counts.

I’ve learned-

that you should never ruin an apology with an excuse.

I’ve learned-

that it’s taking me a long time to become the person I want to be.

I’ve learned-

that you should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see them.

I’ve learned-

that heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences.

I’ve learned-

that money is a lousy way of keeping score.

I’ve learned-

that my best friend and I can do anything or nothing and have the best time.

This is the way of Tao.

That is by far not an exhaustive list but I do not want to send you away weary.

I have also learned that you can meet the nicest people in the world of blogging and miss them when you do not hear from them.

  1. Wise words, as always Ralph. I know I still need to take some of those lessons to heart.

  2. Good Morning Ralph, I am alive and well and today will be a great day! Just when I thought I got it all I realized that I have a lot more to learn!

  3. You have learned a lot, my friend... But more than that, you have helped and taught many... I'm grateful that you found my blog and led me to yours. Not a day goes by that I don't read Ralph's morning message. It starts me off with a smile and a warm thought.

  4. This is a great list. I just sent it to someone I thought could benefit from reading it. She's been a lost soul of late. Perhaps your words will help her see clarity. Thanks.

  5. Good Morning Ralph! Great list-really brilliant. Negative can really be positive. The fellow who was insulted was not looking at how not accepting his IOU made the day better for both of you (you got to spend more time together) and (he really could not predict this part)...also how we can all benefit from your essay about it.

  6. I've learned:-
One true friend is the best gift in the world.
    I've learned:-
    Expect nothing give all.
    I've learned:-
    Justice does not happen.
    I've learned:-
I am usually wrong 99.9% of the time and am having difficulty finding the .1% when I am right.
    I've learned:-
    The less said the better.
I've learned not to offer words of wisdom for I am viewed as belonging to the dinosaur age just awaiting a glass cage in the museum.
    I've learned
Misery does not love company unless the company is miserable.
    Finally I've learned:-
"It" doesn't matter, whatever "it" may be for "it" too is fleeting and only momentary.

  8. What a great list, and it sounds like it is by no means comprehensive. To live long enough to learn most of it, now that's a hope worth hoping.

Your friends are lucky to have such a thoughtful man as you for their friend.
